Constructionism – A Gentle Introduction
Wikipedia’s commentary was a great way to be introduced to the constructionist learning theory. I was informed by how the theory can be applied in many key learning areas, including two subjects that do not have the reputation of being engaging or motivating: mathematics and science. Instead this learning theory aims to transform learning from a passive activity into ‘actively making things in the real world’. Therefore, allowing students to construct their learning by doing, through experimentation and ‘the making of social objects’. Hence, making learning activities purposeful and relievent so that students are playing an active role in their learning, as they themselves construct knowledge through the resources and materials provided by the educator.
